Dr. Janice Perlman is an urban scholar, practitioner and advisor. Her recent book, Favela: Four Decades of Living on the Edge in Rio de Janeiro (Oxford University Press) is based on her longitudinal study of migrants and squatters starting in 1969.  It follows upon her seminal 1976 work, The Myth of Marginality (UCB Press). She is President of Mega-Cities, a strategic policy/research organization developed to “shorten the lag time between ideas and implementation in urban problem solving”.  She was Professor of City and Regional Planning at UCBerkeley; Strategic Planner for the NYC Partnership, and coordinator of the Neighborhood Taskforce of the National Urban Policy. Her Awards include: a Guggenheim Award, C Wright Mills Award; Chester Rapkin Award; PROSE Award; and Global Citizens Award. She holds a BA is in Anthropology from Cornell and a PhD in Political Science/Urban Studies from MIT.
